When Something Feels Different: Paying Attention as Parents Age
Dear friends,
There’s often no single moment when you realize your parent needs help.
It’s quieter than that.
It’s the hesitation before they answer a question.
The unopened mail gathering on the table.
The home feels just slightly different from the way it once did.
You may not be able to explain it.
But you feel it.
And that feeling matters.
Many of the families I speak with don’t begin with certainty. They begin with a quiet awareness—something has shifted.
We tend to look for obvious signs. A fall. A diagnosis. A moment that makes everything clear.
But more often, the early signs aging parents need help are subtle:
- Small changes in memory or routine
- A home that isn’t being maintained the same way
- Missed medications or appointments
- Less interest in things they once enjoyed
- A shift in mood, energy, or confidence
On their own, these changes can be easy to dismiss. Together, they begin to tell a story.
And here’s something I often remind families:
You don’t have to wait for something to go wrong to begin paying attention.
You’re allowed to trust what you’re noticing.
You’re allowed to ask questions.
You’re allowed to explore what support might look like—without committing to anything right away.
(If you’re unsure what you’re seeing, it can help to step back and look at the bigger picture. I’ve outlined some of the more common indicators here:

Sometimes, even having a conversation—just talking through what you’re noticing—can bring clarity.
Not because you need immediate answers,
but because you deserve peace of mind.
And if you find yourself in that space—uncertain, but paying attention—
that’s often the right time to begin exploring what support could look like, even in the smallest way.
Because that quiet awareness you’re feeling?
It’s not something to ignore.
It’s often the very first step in caring well.
