How to Talk to an Aging Parent About Accepting Help

Dear friends,

This is one of the most delicate conversations you may ever have.

Not because you don’t know what to say—
but because you care so deeply.

You’ve noticed the changes.
You’ve felt that quiet shift.
And now you’re wondering how to bring it up without causing fear, resistance, or hurt.

Talking to an aging parent about accepting help can feel like crossing a line.

For them, it can feel like a loss—of independence, of control, of identity.
For you, it can feel like you’re overstepping.

So instead of thinking about how to “convince” them,
I invite you to think about how to connect.

Start gently.

“I’ve been thinking about you.”
“I want to make sure things feel easier for you.”
“What would make your days feel a little more manageable?”

Keep the conversation open.
Keep it collaborative.

And most importantly—give it time.

This is rarely a one-time discussion. It’s a series of moments, built on trust.

You may not get agreement right away. That’s okay.

Sometimes it helps to first understand what changes you’re noticing and whether they point to something more. If you’re unsure, you can start with our guide: signs your loved one may need home care.

Having clarity—even for yourself—can make these conversations feel more grounded.

And in some cases, it can also help to bring in a neutral voice—someone who can guide the conversation in a way that feels supportive, not personal. Not to push, but to ease the transition.

Because the goal is not to take over.

It’s to preserve dignity.
To support independence in a different way.
To ensure your parent feels safe, seen, and respected.

If you’ve been struggling with how to begin,
you’re not alone.

You don’t have to get it perfect.
You just have to begin.

With warmth and gratitude,
